Design Statement
The tragedy The Trojan Women by Euripides focuses on the fates of the women of Troy after their city has been destroyed, their husbands killed, and their remaining family members taken away as slaves. This design draws inspiration from the tragic real-life aftermath of destruction brought by wars, both past and present, and the people, mostly women, affected by it. When the audience first enters the theater, they encounter crumbling, ash-covered walls, broken railings, and blood-stained bullet holes. The audience needs to grasp that a place that was once called home will never return to its original state, and to question what occurred here to bring about such devastation. The destroyed statue of Priam symbolizes the current plight of the men of Troy and serves as a reminder that all hope is lost and that there is no turning back. With this design, I aimed for the audience to feel as if they are witnessing firsthand the grief and suffering that the characters endured before they were taken away to horrific fates.
